The following Congressional Members will serve as Committee Chairs and Ranking Members in the 118th Congress that have a high impact potential on the University and its core missions.
Senate Committee Chairs for 118th Congress
Appropriations Committee: The Senate Appropriations Committee will be led by Patty Murray (D-WA), with Susan Collins (R-ME) as Ranking Member. This committee has jurisdiction over all discretionary spending legislation in the Senate.
Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation: The Senate Commerce Committee is chaired by Maria Cantwell (D-WA) with Roger Wicker (R-MS) as Ranking Member. This committee has broad jurisdiction over all matters concerning interstate commerce, science and technology policy, and transportation.
Health, Education, Labor and Pension Committee (HELP): The HELP Committee will be chaired by Bernie Sanders (I-VT), with Bill Cassidy (R-LA) serving as Ranking Member. Senators Sanders and Cassidy have a history of working bi-partisan.
House Committee Chairs for 118th Congres
Appropriations Committee: Texas Republican Kay Granger takes the helm at Appropriations. Rosa DeLauro, D-Connecticut, will continue as the top Appropriations Democrat in this Congress.
Education and the Workforce Committee: Virginia Foxx of North Carolina to chair the Committee on Education and the Workforce, returning her to a position she held from 2017 to 2019. Robert C. Scott, D-Virginia, will serve as the Ranking Member.
Energy and Commerce Committee: Cathy McMorris Rodgers is the Chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and represents Washington’s Fifth Congressional District. She was appointed to the House Energy and Commerce Committee in 2010. Representative Frank Pallone (D) from New Jersey's 6th District serves as Ranking Member.
Oversight and Accountability Committee: Kentucky GOP Rep. James R. Comer is the chairman of the House Oversight and Accountability Committee. Comer has said his Committee agenda will focus on investigating the Biden administration across various procedural concerns. Maryland Representative Jamie Raskin (D- MD- 8th) serves the Ranking Member on the committee.
Science, Space and Technology Committee: Frank D. Lucas, (R-OK-3rd), is taking over the Science, Space, and Technology Committee, which oversees science agencies and federal research. Zoe Lofgren, (D-Cal), is the top Democrat member on the committee.
Ten George Washington University alumni secured wins in the 2022 midterm elections for Congress, including one member re-elected to a second term in the Senate and six members re-elected to the House of Representatives. They join two other alumni who were not up for reelection, bringing GW's Congressional Alumni to twelve. Of the successful alumni elected to Congress, three won campaigns in their first efforts at running for a seat in the nation’s legislature. All were sworn in to the 118th U.S. Congress on Saturday, January 7, 2023, by Kevin McCarthy (R-CA-22) after securing the Speakership on the 15th ballot.
Senate
Tammy Duckworth (D), M.A. ’92, Honorary Doctor of Public Service ’17, was re-elected to a second term in the U.S. Senate representing Illinoi
Two other alumni are in the Senate - Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), ATT ’66-’68, and Mark Warner (D-Va.), B.A. ’77 - but were not up for re-election.
House of Representatives
Julia Brownley (D) B.A. ’75, California’s 26th District, will serve a sixth House term after securing her win in California.
Neal Dunn (R), M.D. ’79, Florida’s 2nd District, won a fourth term in the House.
Andrew Garbarino (R), B.A. ’06, New York’s 2nd District, won a second House term. Rep. Garbarino was appointed to the House Committee on Financial Services.
Darren Soto (D), J.D. ’04, Florida’s 9th District, secured a fourth House term.
William Timmons (R), B.A. ’06: South Carolina’s 4th District, won an unopposed race to secure a third House term. Rep. Timmons was appointed to the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability
Susan Wild (D), J.D. ’82, Pennsylvania’s 7th District, was re-elected for a third term in the House. Rep. Wild was appointed to the House Ethics Committee.
Newly elected to the House
Erin Houchin (R), M.P.S ’12: Indiana’s 9th District, won her first House seat. She will succeed Trey Hollingsworth, a Republican who did not seek re-election. Rep. Houchin was appointed to the House Committee on Financial Services
Jared Moskowitz (D), B.A. ’03: Florida’s 23rd District, replaces Democratic incumbent Ted Deutch, who did not seek re-election.
Jill Tokuda (D), B.A. ’98: Hawaii’s 2nd District, secured a first House term and will succeed Kai Kahele.
Please note that authorize and appropriate carry different meanings. Authorized programs are those which Congress has provided authority to be conducted but has not necessarily funded. Appropriated programs are those which Congress has funded. An authorized program, while not representing real money, may provide insight into where future investment might be made.
